Grantee partner Housing + Solutions teams up with Brooklyn DA’s office on alternative for mothers
facing prison

September 21,2011

The New York Times article "Staying with Children and Out of Prison" reports on how our grantee partner, Housing + Solutions, helped launch a pilot program created by the office of the Brooklyn district attorney, Charles J. Hynes. Drew House is a residential alternative to incarceration, where mothers facing incarceration can live with their school’age children in a non–secured facility. The program is the first of its kind in New York City and the nation. Read more

NYWF Grantee partners collaborate on behalf of public housing residents
August 8, 2011

Three of our grantee partners, The Urban Justice Center, Community Voices Heard, and Good Old Lower East Side partnered with other community groups to conduct a major survey of public housing residents in 71 public housing developments across the city. The newly released report card shows that public housing in New York City is in crisis, failing to meet the needs of its residents

A Nepali Group Assists Immigrants in Need

Grantee partner Adhikaar promotes human rights and social justice in Nepali communities in New York. With little knowledge of English, these new residents struggle to access services. So, among its many supports for new immigrants, Adhikaar provides free English classes. The students say, "It’s like having a family here in the USA." Read more
 
Our grantee SWAN has long advocated policy changes for women veterans who survive sexual assault

The Department of Veteran Affairs changes policy

Congratulations to our grantee partner SWAN, whose tireless efforts on behalf of women veterans continue to yield big impacts. The Ms. Magazine blog reports that the Veterans Affairs Office "Decides To Trust Women about PTSD." According to the agency it will ease its ‘standards of proof’ for sexual assault-related disabilities.

FIERCE contends for new SPOT location for LGBTQ youth

Despite resistance from community members in the West Village, our grantee partner Fabulous Independent Educated Radicals for Community Empowerment (FIERCE) is moving forward with their plan to establish a Safe Place to Organize Together (SPOT) LGBT youth center in the neighborhood. They say that recent interactions between the New York Police department and LGBT youth highlight the need for a 24- hour drop-in center. The center will provide much needed services for LGBTQ youth. That our grantee partner Grace Outreach is highlighted in a June 23rd Wall Street Journal article for their work preparing women to attain a high school diploma. Last night over a hundred women from the South Bronx celebrated their graduation! Congratulations to all the graduates! More

New international labor standards for Domestic Workers across the globe

We are proud to share yet another extraordinary victory for our former grantee partner Domestic Workers United whose fierce determination has contributed to the establishment of international labor standards for Domestic Workers across the globe! Starting with a six–year long campaign, DWU celebrated their first legislative victory when the New York State Legislature passed the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights on July 1, 2010. Almost within a year of the bill having been passed in NY, the California State Assembly approved the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights on June 2, 2011. "Today Governments, Employers and Workers of the world at the 100th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland adopted the First Convention and accompanying Recommendation on Decent Work for Domestic Workers." More
