Advancing Pay Equity in New York City

This week, NYC Public Advocate Letitia James released a policy report, Advancing Pay Equity in New York City—An analysis of the gender wage gap in New York City’s workforce. This report, coinciding with Equal Pay Day on April 12, highlighted the disparities in earnings that women face compared to their male counterparts. Women of color are disproportionately impacted by the gender wage gap, and this racial disparity is great in NYC than the national average.
“Women’s economic security is more critical than ever, as women are the sole or primary earner for 40% of U.S. households with children under the age of 18,” Ana L. Oliveira, President and CEO, The New York Women’s Foundation. “Closing the gender and racial wage gap is a key component of this effort and we are thrilled that Public Advocate James and her office have highlighted this issue with their new report Advancing Pay Equity in New York City. We recognize that changing policies and systems is a significant part of long-term and sustainable change in advancing economic justice for women. The New York Women’s Foundation is proud to support grantee partners who are advocating for greater workplace protections and policies in alignment with many of the report’s recommendations.”
