Algorithms can help startups push diversity from day one
Tech has a diversity problem – and many justifications for why things are the way they are. Lately, however, a growing number of people are starting to view “the way things are” as unacceptable. Research has shown that decision-making groups with gender and racial diversity outperform more homogenous groups – both in coming up with more creative ideas and in making more money.
Women remain in the shadows because 80% of key global gender data is missing
In 2012, the United Nations Economic and Social Council set down indicators – some 52 of them – crucial to measuring gender equality in any country. However, a new report has now found that globally we don’t have 80% of the necessary gender data on those indicators.

What becomes of the babies of incarcerated mothers? Research suggests that having nurseries in prisons leads to lower recidivism rates for moms and better outcomes for their kids. The Atlantic reports that prison nursery programs, such as Hour Children Family Services in Mothers of Bedford Hills CF helps to reduce recidivism.
New Momentum on Paid Leave, in Business and Politics
Oregon this month became the fourth state to pass a bill requiring that companies give workers paid sick days to care for themselves or family members.
Bloomberg’s Gun-Control Group Financing Nonprofit Newsroom
Everytown for Gun Safety, a firearms-control organization backed by billionaire philanthropist and former New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, is preliminarily funding a journalism Web site focused on gun violence. The nonprofit site, the Trace, went live Friday, two days after nine people were gunned down at a historic black church in Charleston, S.C.
Mayor & Council Announce $78.5B Fiscal 2016 Budget Deal
Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced that they had reached a deal on a balanced fiscal year 2016 city budget. Budget highlights include $4.3 million to eliminate waitlists for the Department for the Aging’s homecare program, and $2 million to expand elder abuse prevention.
