The Foundation Mourns the Loss of Kwanza Butler

It is with great sadness that I share the loss of an integral member of The New York Women’s Foundation community. The Foundation mourns the passing of our beloved former Board Chair Kwanza Butler. Our hearts are with Kwanza’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

Kwanza embodied radical generosity, as evidenced by her longstanding devotion to The Foundation for nearly two decades. She started her commitment at The Foundation as a Circle of Sisters for Social Change member 15 years ago, after which she embarked on her tenure with the Board of Directors.

Kwanza served as a Board Member from 2012-2019, chairing Committee on the Board from 2014-2015, becoming our Vice Chair from 2016-2017, and Board Chair from 2017-2019.

Her fierce leadership was instrumental in advancing The Foundation’s mission with grace and determination.

The loss of Kwanza Butler leaves a void in our community and in our hearts. We mourn not only an influential leader, but a friend, a joyful and generous partner.

Her absence will be felt at this year’s Celebrating Women Breakfast and all Foundation gatherings going forward. May we carry on her legacy in our pursuit of equity and justice.
