Top 10 Funders of U.S. Trans Communities

For every $100 awarded by U.S. Foundations, less than 3 cents benefits trans communities even though it is estimated that there are more than 1 million “out” trans people loving across the United States. On account of persistent workplace harassment, discrimination, and biased terminations, transgender people experience crushing levels of poverty that often lead to homelessness. Transgender people are nearly four times more likely to be living on less than $10,000 than the general population.
Even though The New York Women’s Foundation has been named as one of the top ten funders of U.S. Trans Communities by Grantmakers United for Trans Communities, an initiative of Funders for LGBTQ Issues, we know that there needs to be an increase in the scale and scope of philanthropic resources supporting the wellbeing of trans communities.
As a foundation for all women, we will continue to do everything in our power to protect and help advance the well-being of trans and gender non-conforming people in ways that are created with, by and for these communities.
